After an investigation by Thames Valley Police, a man has been found guilty of hiding £70,000 worth of drugs in tubs of Celebrations in Maidenhead.

Hassan Akhtar, 64, was found guilty by a jury on one count of exporting a class A drug following a five day trial in Reading Crown Court.

Detective Sergeant Rob Hood, Senior Investigating Officer of the Serious and Organised Crime Unit, said: “This successful conviction follows a detailed investigation by Thames Valley’s Serious and Organised Crime Unit.

“Akhtar attempted to export more than 5,000 MDMA tablets to Pakistan. The drugs had a street value of about £70,000.

“Akhtar secreted the drugs in tubs of Celebration chocolates and sent them to Pakistan via DHL courier.

“When the courier collected the parcel he queried the value of the consignment against the cost of shipping and, therefore, opened one of the boxes and located the drugs.

“The police were then called and Akhtar was identified from the CCTV footage”.

Akhtar is scheduled to be sentenced on 2 September.
